Olive Oil Lamp and Firestarter

Mother Earth News shows how to “Make Your Own Olive Oil Lamp.” I did something like that last year for around the pond. The jar makes it so the wind won’t blow out the flame, and veggie oil really is cheaper than alternatives.

Another use for olive oil is as a firestarter. It’s a clean oil, and doesn’t seem to leave any buildup in our wood stove chimney. You could fill paper cups or muffin liners with sawdust or dryer lint over a bit of olive oil, but I’m a cheapskate. So I just form a little divot in the newspaper I normally crumple and liberally add to start a fire, put some dryer lint (have to use the dryer in sub-zero temps) in that, and slosh in a very small amount of olive oil. This will burn for a while, so it’s a lazy way to start a fire.

  1. Pretty nice. I imagine with a little bit of ingenuity I could come up with a hood for it so as to keep the rain out if using it outdoors. Large enough and with the underside painted white it would probably reflect enough light to read by.

  2. Wulfgar, welcome! If you make that lamp, will you post what you did and maybe a pic? Sounds perfect for any use.
